When the Old Globe's original theatre succumbed to midnight arson in 1978,
Landry & Bogan and Richard Hay of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival were
retained directly by the company to design a replacement. 100 days
later, a ravishing production of Midsummer Night's Dream under a full
moon opened the temporary outdoor Festival Theatre, and the same team began the
planning of the new indoor theatre. Hay and Landry & Bogan developed the
program, and designed the theatre and all theatrical systems for the new Old
Globe. It is unabashedly Elizabethan in architectural context, but
suitable for a wide range of production styles. Two lifts and movable
splay towers permit thrust staging, proscenium form and various hybrid forms.
